Ubuntu Freezing

I was in the process of beginning to install Ruby when the terminal froze during the “sudo apt upgrade” process.

The system rebooted and now Linux won’t start up at all. I’m getting an error message that says:

"[0.956909] Kernel panic - Not syncing: VFS unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (0,0):
CPU:1 PID: 1 Comm: Swapper/0 not tainted 4.15.0-55-generic #60ubuntu

Ubuntu was working fine before the update and upgrade process.

Any suggestions on how to get the system to load again?

I hope you can find the answer below.
